On Why Art History Cannot Be Outsourced to Art Dealers
|
(10.12.2022) This can be very brief:
The reason why the writing of art history cannot be outsourced to art dealers, is the reason that art dealers, as soon as they make mistakes, use to stop to act transparently, because it would harm them as to their reputation and destroy their business model. Scholarship, on the other hand, does require complete transparency, and scholarship has to be open, by principle, to revision. Revisions might also harm the repution of scholars, but it does not destroy their business model, given that they are academics and hold a position that, whatever errors they make, cannot be gravely affected by the errors they might make in scholarship.
