Orchard Auctioning Day (Chekhov Day)
(19.8.2023) Here is my contribution to Chekhov Day of 2023. What is Chekhov Day? Chekhov Day is August 22, because this is the date the cherry orchard in Chekhov’s play The Cherry Orchard gets auctioned. (I have declared this date to be Chekhov Day.)
Now what is my contribution? It is a) a surrealist painting called Orchard Auctioning Day (above), which is depicting a dreamscape: that’s probably me on the ladder on the left, to inspect the cherry orchard which has been put, as a whole, into a humongous handbag, which has a cherry symbol on it. That’s orchard auctioning day (perhaps the night before).
And b) a series of photographs of an orchard endangered. See Orchard Nostalgia above on the left. And see the machines coming on the right. But beware – it is all fake. The orchard is not really endangered. It only looks as if it is. And actually there are probably works to do in the street so everyone can have internet with glass fibre cables. But this is Chekhov Day as well. Because we are all focussed on the work of Chekhov and on the motif of the cherry orchard very in particular.
