The Wallace Collection, King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the Desire for a Catalogue

Sir Richard Wallace

Jean Paul Richter (1847-1937)
(for detailed picture credit see my Das Schlaraffenleben der Kunst)

An obsession for 18th century art is what Richard Wallace, collector, and Ludwig II, king of Bavaria, obviously had in common. Read in my biography of Jean Paul Richter how the king’s appetite for knowing more about the Wallace collection inspired the commission a three volumes catalogue, exclusively to be prepared for the king himself, who kept these volumes, that only recently have been rediscovered and now represent the earliest record of this collection, in his various castles (above: interior of the Wallace Collection, London; picture: Sailko).
