The Independent Scholar
(30.9.2023) What is lacking the most in scholarship? By which I mean: What is lacking the most in scholarship internationally, and in the realm of the humanities? And my answer is not that of probably most academic scholars. Who go: moan, moan, moan – jobs, jobs, jobs. And these are only those academic scholars who will raise a voice. Those who already benefit from the system of the humanities have a silent answer. Which is: Moan, moan, moan – freedom, freedom, freedom. And freedom, freedom, freedom is exactly the slogan those academic scholars who still aspire for a job will not dare to voice aloud.
My answer is: what is lacking the most in scholarship internationally is a forum for those scholars, motivated scholars, who consider themselves to be independent scholars. A forum which would be organized as a classical internet forum, and which would voice and represent the interests of the community of independent (not academically employed) scholars. Who often, perhaps not always, but often seem to be the more motivated, more ambitious, more sensitive, and yes, often also the better scholars than many mediocre, but academically employed scholars (who still, very often, do seem to look down at the community of independent scholars). A community that does exist, but not visually so. And what I am going to do here, is my first attempt to develop an iconography of the independent scholar, and iconography for such forum.
It is basically a title with a logo. The logo is a crystal, representing scholarship as a whole, but on the upper level we see the community of academically employed scholars. Who look down at the one independent scholar. Who has just installed his own tent. Because the independent scholar usually is a loner. And if, he or she, does attend a conference, he or she whill prefer not to stay in the same hotel as the academic scholars. More to come, but for the moment this is it: We look at the idea of installing a forum for the independent scholar. Because she and he deserves it.
