A Secret Anniversary
Kevin Costner is closing a door. But no, this is not Kevin Costner. This is Kenneth O’Donnell, (ficticious) Special Assistant to President John F. Kennedy. While the Kennedy administration (including Kevin Costner, no Kenneth O’Donnell) is handling the Cuban Missile Crisis.
But yes, this is Kevin Costner. And the above still (from the movie Thirteen Days, which is recounting the handling of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis by the Kennedy administration) does show one of my favourite subtle allusions in movies. From one movie to another movie.
Since this is also a secret tenth anniversary. Of Kevin Costner, having played in and having directed Dancing With Wolves of 1990. And Thirteen Days was a movie of 2000. Which is: this is a tenth anniversary, that was, secretly, celebrated within a movie.
But does he, Kevin Costner, look at the picture of the buffalo or not? Because if yes, it would not be that subtle an allusion.
But it does seem to me that he doesn’t look at the White House picture, but that he, Kenneth O’Donnell, does close this White House door while being immersed in Kenneth O’Donnell thoughts.
And I would say that Thirteen Days
is also a movie about pictures,
and about pictures’ roles in history
